Mathematics Major
The Mathematics Major provides students with the fundamental background needed to engage with the broad discipline that is Mathematics and grants them an opportunity to broaden this background or specialize in a specific field with our major concentrations. Course knowledge includes the calculus sequence, computer programming, proof-based fundamental mathematics, linear/matrix algebra, abstract algebra, probability, and statistics, and real analysis. Students will choose between one of our five concentrations: General Mathematics, Graduate Preparatory, Applied Mathematics, Teaching of Mathematics, and Data Optimization. All Math majors must complete the Supporting Coursework requirement.
Requirements Supporting Coursework
Mathematics & Computer Science
In collaboration with the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science, the Mathematics & CS major provides students with both a strong mathematical background and computer science techniques that can be used in a variety of industries. This joint program aids students in building flexible skills that bridge the mathematical and technological fields. Students are trained in the tools of both disciplines — formal methods, analysis, and a computer programming with the aim of creating confident professionals that can tackle new systems and complex problems.
Minors
Mathematics Minor
The Mathematics Minor provides opportunity for non-majors to study mathematics and requires at least 6 hours of 300/400-level classes which you are NOT using for your major or any other minor.
Teacher Education Minor in Mathematics, Grades 9-12
The Teacher Education Minor in Mathematics is for students in teacher education curricula other than mathematics who wish to be qualified to teach mathematics at the high school level.
