The Department of Mathematics offers several degree programs including a PhD in Mathematics, and MS degrees in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and the Teaching of Mathematics. Students who have a strong background in mathematics and who wish to earn a doctorate should apply directly to the PhD program. PhD students can often earn a Masters during their course of study.
The MS in Mathematics program provides a wide range of courses to choose from and is versatile, preparing students for industry jobs or continued education in mathematics. The MS in Applied Mathematics program is intended for students wishing to pursue a career in applied mathematics and is also suitable for PhD preparation. Students in this program may choose one of three tracks: Optimization and Algorithms, Applications to the Sciences, or Computational Science and Engineering. The MS in the Teaching of Mathematics is intended for those who wish to teach at the high school or community college level.
Graduate students will also have access to an abundant array of campus resources and departmental seminars as well as graduate student groups including chapters of the American Mathematical Society and the Association for Women in Mathematics. Students may also apply to work with undergraduate students through the Illinois Mathematics Lab (IML).
