Welcome Picnic

Welcome picnic

Our potluck-style picnic is held in August to celebrate the beginning of a new school year and to welcome and recruit new students, especially women, to our community. This event also serves as a medium for older graduate students to give advice and mentorship to incoming graduate students.

Fall and Spring Outings

The AWM Social Chair plans to host several social events at various venues to encourage and foster a sense of community amongst graduate students and postdocs. Past activities include laser tag at Skateland Savoy and a trip to Curtis Orchard & Pumpkin Patch. We also take a fun spin on the mathematics behind these activities, such as Isaac Newton’s apple tree and his influence on physics and calculus at Curtis Orchard.

International Women’s Day Celebration

This event will be held at the beginning of March. The goal is for graduate students and faculty to come together and celebrate the accomplishments and discoveries of women in the field of mathematics. Participants are encouraged to bring a dish to share.

Spring Luncheon for Female Faculty & Students

We would like to encourage socialization and collaboration among female faculty and graduate students by hosting a catered lunch. Since the faculty is largely male-dominated, most female graduate students have had little to no interaction with women who work as professors in our department. This luncheon will help facilitate academic connections and collaboration among female members of the department.
