One by one, mathematicians filed into the virtual conference room, their avatars appearing as colorful circles with dots for eyes. Then their faces popped onto the Zoom meeting, and they greeted their colleagues from around the world. It was time to kick off a week of collaborative mathematical exploration, informal network-building, and insightful professional development—the summer Mathematics Research Community (MRC) workshops had arrived.
