Jean Bourgain, IBM von Neumann Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, passed away in Bonheiden, Belgium, on December 22 at the age of 64.  Bourgain held the named faculty position of J. L. Doob Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois from 1985 to 2005. He joined the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton School of Mathematics as a Professor in 1994, the same year he received a Fields Medal, and has been an IBM von Neumann Professor since 2010. Bourgain was a giant in the field of mathematical analysis, which he has applied broadly and to great effect. In many instances, he provided foundations for entirely new areas of study and in other instances he created new techniques to resolve the most difficult long-standing problems in mathematics.  In addition to his many awards, his most recent was the Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement awarded in 2018 by the American Mathematical Society.
