IGL Projects

At the lab, undergraduate students work closely with graduate students and postdocs on visualization projects set forth by faculty members, as well as to bring mathematics to the community through school visits and other activities. IGL research is supported by the Department of Mathematics and the Office of Public Engagement at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Apply to Join an IGL Project

The IGL undergraduate organization devoted to outreach in mathematics. We encourage any undergraduate student at Illinois to join; membership is not limited to mathematics majors. Examples of activities include Science at the Market, local science fairs, and field trips for students from preschool to high school. For details, see go.illinois.edu/IGL-outreach. When applying to join IGL, please consider the following:

  • Please list all projects in which you are interested. Some projects get many more applications than other projects. Therefore, the application process for some projects is more competitive than for others. Your chance to be accepted is higher if you list at least three projects.
  • You will still be able change your application after you have submitted it. So if you apply now and later change your mind about which projects you want to apply to, you can still make changes to your application right until the deadline.

Whether you're ready to start a career in mathematics, work with distinguished Illinois faculty, or make long-lasting friendships with talented peers, we hope you'll join the Illinois Geometry Lab!

The application for the Spring 2023 projects is now open. To apply, please fill out the following application form:  https://go.illinois.edu/IGL-applicationSpring2023.

There are eight projects open for spring semester, but note that one of them, Quantum Channels and Error Correction II, is only open to students who have already been working on the project (or with the professor).

The deadline for filling out an application is  Thursday, January 12 at 11:59 p.m. Decisions about project teams will be made just prior to the start of the Spring semester.
