This is a continuation of some prior IGL projects, and is a collaboration with Professor Dan Work of Civil and Environmental Engineering.  A number of problems of big data traffic problems can be phrased as low-rank matrix factorization.  Using some work, we hope to apply this to traffic data from New York and Chicago, and some other datasets (which may become available during the semester).  Solid coding ability is required.  http://publish.illinois.edu/r-sowers/traffic-modeling-in-manhattan/  This is a great way to get some skills in a real and important big data problem.
