Requirements for graduation with distinction for Mathematics and Computer Science majors

Requirements for graduation with distinction for Mathematics majors:

  • Distinction requires a grade point average of 3.25 both in all courses taken at Illinois and in all courses taken at Illinois counting toward the mathematics major.
     
  • High Distinction requires either
    • a grade point average of 3.50 both in all courses taken at Illinois and in all courses taken at Illinois counting toward the mathematics major, and in addition a grade of at least B+ in at least two courses chosen from the list below
      or
    • a grade point average of 3.75 both in all courses taken at Illinois and in all courses taken at Illinois counting toward the mathematics major.
  • Highest Distinction requires all three of the following:
    • a grade point average of 3.75 both in all courses taken at Illinois and in all courses taken at Illinois counting toward the mathematics major,
    • a grade of at least B+ in at least two courses chosen from the list below
      and
    • completion of an approved senior project, resulting in a paper such as would typically be produced in Math 496 or an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates)

List of math courses used in the criteria for High Distinction and Highest Distinction:

418, 423, 424, 425, 427, 428, 432, 447, 448, 496, any 500 level math course


Modifications of the above criteria on an individual basis are at the discretion of the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics.
