We have received the news that Carole Appel passed away on November 14, 2020. Carole’s husband, Ken Appel, was a faculty member in our department for many years. Although the Appels moved away almost 30 years ago, they retained close connections with many members of the department and visited Champaign-Urbana regularly.
Carole and other members of the Appel family attended the 2017 Four Color Fest, held on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the proof of the Four Color Theorem. At a reception held during that event, Carole reminisced about their time at Illinois and the events leading to the proof of the Four Color Theorem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofAkY3h_u8M&feature=youtu.be (Carole’s remarks begin at time index 25:45).
The News-Gazette has published an obituary of Carole Appel.
The Appel family will hold a virtual memorial service on this coming Saturday, November 21 at 4 pm ET/3 pm CT. For details, and for information about how to attend this service, please visit https://www.everlywheatley.com/tributes/Carole-Appel.
