Due to popular demand, the University of Illinois Graduate Student Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is holding a series of GEMS workshops both semesters this year! GEMS is a female-focused pair of free workshops for 5th-8th graders on the many ways in which mathematics interacts with and influences the world around us! Our goals are to present interesting math in a fun, hands-on way and encourage students from traditionally underrepresented genders to get engaged with STEM.
This October, 5th-8th grade students can get engaged with math in a pair of free workshops around the theme of Math and Culture:
- October 12, 2019, 1-4 PM, Altgeld Hall: Numbers Aren't Universal: Counting and number systems throughout space and time
- October 19, 2019, 1-4 PM, Altgeld Hall: Mathematics of Poetry: 'Fibonacci' numbers, enumerative combinatorics, and ancient India
